In a major boost for real estate development in New Town, the township will be getting concrete roads soon as per reports. HIDCO (Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation) has proposed the development of concrete roads in phases throughout New Town. This will lower overall maintenance costs of these stretches which often eat into a major chunk of overall revenue collected. The craters and potholes from the monsoon in areas under the Nabadiganta and Sector V townships will be fully repaired prior to Durga Puja. There are 200 kilometres of roads in New Town along with another 25 kilometres in Sector V.
Experts have stated that while building concrete roads, the upper layers should have a thin tar layer in order to enable smoother movement of cars and lower environmental pollution. Cracks that are deeper than 3 mm should be immediately repaired and a start-up company has agreed to offer vehicle with CCTV cameras for detection of these cracks. These vehicles will be moving around in New Town and will report to a central monitoring system. Upon detection of cracks, the repairing agencies will be immediately informed through this system itself.
HIDCO will ask for a pilot study and based on the report, the final steps will be implemented. There will be emphasis on visual improvements and HIDCO has already worked to increase overall green cover in New Town. Tree nurseries have already been set up in collaboration with the State Forest Department. Planting of saplings has been done on a large scale basis as well. These roadside trees are watered on a daily basis with recycled water via vehicles that have been specially designed for this purpose.
These improvements and the building of concrete roads will definitely boost demand for real estate in New Town which is anyway on the higher side at present. New Town is witnessing the development of several big-ticket residential real estate projects including DLF New Town Heights, Shristi The V and Nirman Hijibiji among others.
