In a major infrastructural boost for New Town, there will be more subways and underpasses set up here. HIDCO (Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation) has planned the development of vehicular underpasses and pedestrian subways at four vital traffic intersections on New Town’s key arterial road for enhancing overall pedestrian safety and traffic management infrastructure. These four spots are the junction where the New Town bus terminus is situated, the Biswa Bangla Gate Crossing, Novotel Crossing and the Chinar Park Crossing.
Expressions of interest have already been floated by HIDCO for selection of the agency or consultant for executing surveys and coming up with feasibility studies on these proposed subways and underpasses. Overall vehicle flow has gone up rapidly over the last few years in New Town on the key arterial road and these intersections have become key points for both pedestrian and vehicular movements. HIDCO had previously held discussions with Bidhannagar traffic police for measures to improve overall safety and traffic management.
Two pedestrian subways were also opened on the VIP Road and EM Bypass earlier in 2018 by the PWD and KMDA. There will be a 24 hour survey of traffic near these intersections conducted by the agency in question along with a new study on pedestrian movement. Several infrastructural initiatives have transformed New Town in recent years. Big-ticket projects like PS Amistad, Mani Casa, Gurukul Grande and Jain Dream One have come up in the area.
