The HMC (Howrah Municipal Corporation) has planned to launch online tax payment systems from the 25th of June, 2018. This is the deadline and the initiative has been fast tracked after the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, issued instructions to the Howrah Municipal Corporation to launch this at the earliest. The Howrah Municipal Corporation has been working on introducing this new tax payment system over the last few months. The final decision to implement it came at a meeting that was presided by Howrah Mayor Dr. Rathin Chakraborty.
With this new online system for paying property taxes, approximately 1.70 lakh people will benefit hugely. There will be faster provision of civic amenities for residents since they will not have to visit the headquarters for paying off taxes. They will be able to easily log into the official website of the corporation and pay taxes instantly. Revenue collection will also be boosted with this move.
This will help residents avoid standing in longer queues for their property tax payments. The Howrah Municipal Corporation authorities will also be able to keep a tab on taxes being paid and those unpaid. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) already has its own property tax collection system for quite some time now.
