Who is Eligible for a PAN Card?
A PAN card is one of the most essential documents for any tax-paying citizen that even works as proof of identity and date of birth. Any Indian individual, company, local authority, organization, trusts, senior citizens, etc., are eligible for a PAN card application. In fact, every registered tax-payer in the country is required by law to have a PAN card.
This document is mandatory for various financial transactions like receiving a salary that falls under any tax slab, securities purchases, mutual funds investment, etc. The PAN card is used by the income tax authorities to track the financial activity of any tax-paying citizen.
Documents Required for PAN Card Application
There are a certain set of documents that you will have to submit with your application while applying for a PAN card. Given below are some of the documents that you need to attach with your application:
- Individual Applicant: Aadhaar Card, voter ID card, passport, driving licence.
- Hindu Undivided Family (HUF): Proof of identity, proof of address, affidavit issued by the head of the HUF.
- Indian Registered Company: Registration certificate issued by the Registrar of Companies.
- Partnerships/Firms: Registration certificate/Partnership deed.
- Trust: Trust Deed or copy of Registration Certificate issued by the Charity Commissioner’s office.
- Society: Registration certificate number issued by a Charity Commissioner.
- Foreigners: Passport, bank statement, copy of NRE bank statement.
PAN Card Application Process
You can apply for a PAN card both online and offline via Form 49A. The online application for PAN can be done on the NSDL or UTIITSL website. To apply offline, you will be required to download Form 49A and submit it to the nearest TIN facilitation centre. Now let’s take a look at how you can do each of these methods individually:
Online PAN Card Application Process
Given below are the steps for applying for a PAN card online:
Step 1: Visit the official NSDL website.
Step 2: Click on the ‘Apply Online’ tab on the top left corner of the page. Based on your citizenship, select either a New PAN-Indian citizen or New PAN- Foreign citizen from the drop-down menu.
Step 3: Next, choose the category you fall under from options like company, individual, an association of individuals, HUFs (Hindu Undivided Families), local authority, trust, etc.
Step 4: After selecting the appropriate category, provide your personal information like first name, middle name, last name, date of birth, email ID, and phone number.
Step 5: Verify the captcha and click ‘Submit’.
Step 6: You will be provided a 15-digit account number. Take a printout of the same and keep it handy for future reference.
Offline PAN Card Application Process
Given below are the steps to apply for a PAN card offline:
Step 1: Download Form 49A from the official Income Tax Department website or visit your nearest Income Tax PAN Center.
Step 2: There are 8 pages in the form. Fill all the sections in the form with correct details, and attach all necessary documents.
Step 3: Attach a demand draft of Rs. 107 + taxes with the form. In the case of the foreign address, an additional charge of Rs. 887 is applicable.

Application Process for Lost PAN Cards
In case you have lost/misplaced your PAN card, you can always apply for a duplicate one on the NSDL website. Keep in mind that you will require the PAN number issued to you to complete the process.
Given below are the steps for applying for a duplicate PAN card on the NSDL portal.
Step 1: Visit the NSDL website.
Step 2: Click on ‘Apply Now’ under the ‘Reprint of PAN Card’ option.
Step 3: If you are a registered user, you can choose either the ‘Registered User’ or ‘Apply Now’ option.
Step 4: If you are a registered user, enter your phone number, date of birth, email address, and Temporary Token Number. Verify the captcha and click ‘Submit’.
Step 5: Enter your personal details like first name, middle name, last name, category, date of birth, application type, and phone number. Verify the captcha and click ‘Submit’.
Finally, you will receive a token number which you should keep handy for future use.
Your PAN card will be delivered to your correspondence address once the application is processed. You can also choose to receive an e-PAN Card on your registered email ID.

Fees and Charges for PAN Application
Applicants who reside in India have to pay a charge of Rs. 101, including GST and a processing fee of Rs. 86. This fee can, however, vary depending on your chosen mode of payment. The government imposed a uniform rate all over the country to avoid discrepancies in PAN charges.
Fees and Charges for Foreigners
The thriving Indian economy has attracted numerous foreign investors interested in carrying out business operations in the country. A PAN card is mandatory for such entities to carry out any financial transactions. For the same, the government charges a fee of Rs. 1011 (Dispatching cost of Rs. 857 + Application Fee) to issue and dispatch a PAN to applicants with foreign communication addresses.

In this section, we will talk about some of the dos and don’ts that you should follow to complete your application process without any hassle:
Do’s
- Use Form 49A.
- Enter the details in block letters only.
- Attach 2 recent colored passport-sized photographs with white backgrounds.
- Sign within the designated space on the form.
- If the applicant is providing a thumb impression, the same needs to be attested by a public notary, magistrate, or a gazetted officer.
- Make sure you provide the correct AO code.
- Father’s name must be mentioned regardless of marital status (for women).
- Attach proof of identity and proof of address as stated under Rule 114(4) of the Income Tax Laws. The address on the document should match the one in the application form.
- Use Column 14 to provide details of the Representative Assessee (if applicable).
- If a Representative Assessee is appointed, their POA and POI will also be required.
- Enter the complete address along with the landmark and correct postal code.
- Mention telephone number and email address.
Don’ts
- Avoid overwriting any sections of the application form.
- Refrain from pinning or stapling photographs to the application.
- Ensure not to sign outside the box.
- Any additional information other than what is required should not be mentioned in the form.
- Avoid using initials or abbreviations for your name.
- You should not apply for a new PAN card if a PAN has already been allotted to you.
Making Changes and Corrections in PAN Card
Given below is the step-by-step process to apply for making changes in your already existing PAN card:
Step 1: Visit the official NSDL portal.
Step 2: Click on ‘PAN’ under the ‘Services’ tab on the homepage.
Step 3: Click on the ‘Apply’ tab under the “Change/Correction in PAN Data” option.
Step 4: Select your ‘Application Type’ from the drop-down menu. In this case, select ‘Changes or Correction in existing PAN data/Reprint of PAN Card (No changes in Existing PAN Data)’.
Step 5: Select which category you fall under from the drop-down menu. In this case, you need to select ‘Individual’.
Step 6: Enter details like name, email ID, phone number, date of birth, and address.
Step 7: Verify the captcha and click ‘Submit’.
Step 8: A token number will be sent to your registered email address. You can proceed with the process by clicking the button below the number.
Step 9: This will redirect you to a page with the application form. Click on “Submit scanned images through e-Sign on NSDL e-gov”.
Step 10: Fill in all the necessary details and click ‘Next’.
Step 11: This will redirect you to a page where you can make the desired changes.
Step 12: Upload all the necessary documents, such as address proof and age proof.
Step 13: Sign the declaration and click on ‘Submit’.
Step 14: You will then be redirected to the payment gateway where you can make payment through credit/debit card, demand draft, or net banking.
Step 15: After successful payment, you will get an acknowledgment slip. Take a printout of the same, attach the documents and send it to the NSDL office via post or courier. You are also required to attach 2 recent colored passport-size photos with the slip. Be sure to write ‘Application for PAN Change’ on the front of the envelope.

What if I send a cheque instead of Demand Draft as payment to NSDL?
The guidelines mentioned on the website of the Tax Information Network states that payment for PAN applications can only be made through debit cards, credit cards, net banking, or demand draft. Thus, sending a cheque to the NSDL in place of DD might result in the rejection of the application.
What do the statements 'PAN has been allotted by the Income Tax department' and 'Your PAN is under process' mean on the NSDL website?
Each of these statements has different meanings. ‘Your PAN is under process’ means that the PAN application is being processed and is under review by the authorities.
‘PAN has been allotted by the Income Tax Department’ is displayed when the authorities have issued a PAN card in your name and it has been dispatched to the correspondence address.
What is the validity of a PAN Card after it has been issued?
Once the PAN card has been issued to the applicant, it will be valid for a lifetime without any exceptions.
Can I make corrections to the details mentioned in my PAN card?
Yes, you can make changes to the details mentioned in your PAN card on the NSDL website.
Can I apply for multiple PAN Cards?
No, you cannot apply for more than one PAN. Only one PAN card is issued to each individual. If anyone is found having multiple PAN, they can be charged with a fine of up to Rs. 10,000 as stated in Section 272B of the Income Tax Act.
What are the fees for requesting corrections in my PAN details?
The fee for making corrections in PAN details for an Indian address is Rs. 101. However, in the case of a foreign address, the fee is Rs. 1,011. If you request an e-PAN Card, the charges are Rs. 66.
How can I request a new PAN Card without making any changes?
You can request a duplicate card on the NSDL portal. You can do so by using Form 49A. You have to mention all the details as mentioned in your PAN card without clicking the checkbox in front of any field. The charges for the duplicate card are the same as for a new one.
