From fashion to technology, embrace the vivacious colour of the year.
When photos of the upcoming “Barbie” flick from Warner Bros. featuring Margot Robbie broke the Internet, social media influencers hiked the trend #Barbiecore. Soon after, Valentino presented the fall/winter 2022 runway collection clad in hot pink. Now, the global colour authority Pantone Colour Institute has revealed the 2023 colour of the year:
The brave and fearless – Ahoy Viva Magenta!
With this, a new tidal wave of pink is everywhere, in multiple shades! The spontaneous and impulsive Viva Magenta encourages compassion. It contains the power and energy of red, restrained by the calmness of violet. No wonder this bright hue has been termed an “unconventional shade for an unconventional time.”
Ever since the Millenium, Pantone LLC has identified the trends in selecting the colour of the year. As for 2023, this inspirational colour promotes open-mindedness and discourages aggression.
“Viva Magenta represents a prevailing desire for optimism, resilience, outside-the-box thinking and technological innovation to create a better world” stated Laurie Pressman, Pantone’s Vice President.
Interestingly, the origin of colour Magenta emerged in the early 1800s with the invention of the first synthetic aniline dye, mauveine. It sparked a revolution and inspired others in Europe to develop more colours. Later in the 1930s, the commercial success different shades of magenta led to the Magenta Movement.
Pantone 2023 celebrates the consolidation of human creativity and technology (AI Intelligence) in developing a new world called the “Magentaverse”. Pantone experts teamed up with the design firm Huge to compose visual manifestation using the AI generative tool Midjourney. Attendees can enter the physical realm of the Magentaverse at the Art Basel Miami Beach to immerse in the spirit of Pantone 18-1750 Viva Magenta.

Inspired by Nature
The nuanced carmine tone balances the warmth of the physical world with the virtual one. “As virtual worlds become a more prominent part of our daily lives, we look to draw inspiration from nature and what is real,” Leatrice Eiseman, the Pantone Color Institute Executive Director, said in a statement.
This vibrant hue descended from the red family is rooted in mother nature. The bold pink and magenta shades found in the tropical flowers and cochineal dyes derived from insects influenced the creation of the Viva Magenta.

The Pantone colour of the year 2023 is a harbinger of innovation and optimisation that would complement the zestful home interiors. This free-spirited colour will add a distinctive style to the home design.
