The Pentagon Was Initially Intended As A Transient Facility

Army Brigadier General Brehon B. Sommervell conceptualised the Pentagon during the early 1940s, proposing it as a temporary remedy for the War Department’s severe space deficiency as America braced itself for the possibility of joining World War II. However, it was clear from the start that as the war ends, this building will be converted into a hospital or an office complex. Upon receiving approval, construction work commenced on September 11, 1941. A sizeable parcel of land, encompassing approximately 296 acres, was earmarked for the Pentagon building. 

A Monumental Workforce And Vast Material Resources Expedited Its Construction
