The Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund or PM CARES, created in March 2020 in the wake of COVID-19, dedicates the funds towards combat, containment and providing relief against the outbreak of coronavirus or a similar pandemic situation arising in the future. The fund majorly does not receive any support from the budget but rather voluntary contributions by individuals, groups, or organisations.
The trust’s constitution states that the power to nominate three new trustees remains with the chairperson of the Board of Trustees – Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Eminent personalities in law, philanthropy, health, social work, research, science and public administration must be considered eligible to be appointed to the new board of trustees.
In a meeting held by the Board of Trustees, including Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, Nirmala Sitharaman, Union Finance Minister and Amit Shah, Union Home Minister, the new members of the Board of Trustees and the Board of Advisors were proudly announced. A total of three in each are the most exceptional veterans we know and an ideal of many.

The former chairperson of Tata Sons – Ratan Tata, former judge of Supreme Court – KT Thomas and former deputy Lok Sabha speaker – Kariya Munda are nominated to onboard the Trustees of PM CARES Fund. The board further nominated Former Chairperson of Infosys Foundation – Sudha Murthy, Former Comptroller and Auditor General of India – Rajiv Mehrishi, Co-founder of Teach for India, and Former CEO of Indicorps and Piramal Foundation – Anand Shah were nominated to the Board of Advisors.
PM CARES Fund shook hands with the above-mentioned prestigious names with a vision that getting new Trustees and Advisors would broaden its functioning and perspective. PM Modi believes that the experiences they have lived through will further heat the cause of the funds and reach more people with needs. PM Modi praised the attendees for making generous contributions to the fund throughout the conference. An official release stated that there was also a presentation on the numerous initiatives carried out with support from the PM CARES Fund, including the PM CARES for Children programme. A bigger goal of PM CARES is to effectively respond to emergency and distress situations by implementing mitigation steps in addition to providing relief aid and building capacity.
