On Sunday, 28th May, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new parliament in New Delhi and installed the sacred ‘Sengol’ in Lok Sabha.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi installed ‘Sengol’, obtained from Seers of Adheenam received by the first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru on the evening of August 14, 1947, as a symbol of righteousness. As the inauguration ceremony began, PM Modi offered his utmost respect to this hallowed ‘Sengol’. He holds this sacred ‘Sengol’ while seeking blessings from the priests.

With an increased seating capacity, lotus-themed interiors and amazingly built infrastructure, this newly inaugurated parliament bring ancient and modernism together.
The Incredible Triangular Shape and Area
The newly inaugurated parliament building is triangular in shape. According to the architect Bimal Patel, the unique shape complements various religious thoughts, the materials and designs of the new building are complementary to the old Parliament building.
The new three-storey Parliament Building has a built-up area of about 64,500 sqm. The triangular shape maintains maximum space utilization.
Palatial Legislative Chambers
The new Parliament building has larger chambers for the legislature. The new Lok Sabha chamber features a peacock theme, with carvings of the national bird’s feathers on the walls and ceiling and teal carpets to complete the interior with a capacity to host up to 888 seats.
Rajya Sabha features a lotus-themed interior with a red carpet and can host 384 members of Parliament.
Reconstructed Sansad Bhavan
The reconstructed Sansad Bhavan will create employment opportunities and aid in economically reviving the whole constructing value chain.
State-of-the-Art Constitutional Hall
The newly built Constitutional Hall is where Indian democracy has been documented. The constitutional hall primarily puts the Indian citizens at the centre of Indian democracy.
An Amalgamation of Indian Heritage
Modern India’s vibrance and diversity can be seen in the new Parliament building, which primarily includes the country’s regional and cultural arts and crafts. Construction supplies for the building’s interior and exterior have been imported nationwide, including granite from Lakha village in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, and sandstone from Sarmathura in Dholpur. Similarly, the decor’s wood comes from Nagpur, and craftsmen in Mumbai designed the wooden architecture. Bhadohi weavers from Uttar Pradesh created traditional hand-knotted carpets for the structure.
The National Symbols
The exterior is adorned with numerous national emblems, including the Lion Capital of Ashoka, which is the nation’s flag and can be seen from a distance. It weighs 9,500 kg and is 6.5 metres tall. On top of the main foyer, a structure weighing 6,500 kg was built to support this enormous bronze sculpture. The Ashoka chakra and the phrase “Satyameva Jayate” are engraved into the stone at the entryway.
The Importance of ‘Sengol’
As Amit Shah said, ‘’The historical ‘Sengol’ symbolises the transfer of power from the British to India’’. It was given to the first prime minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru. The Tamil word ‘Sengol’ means ‘righteousness’. This gold-coated silver sceptre will be seated close to the Speaker’s podium in the new Lok Sabha chamber. Prime Minister Narendra Modi received this sceptre at the time of the inauguration of the new Parliament from Tamil Nadu priests.
“Temple of Democracy”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi describes this new Parliament building as the ‘temple of democracy’. PM Modi wished that it continues to strengthen India’s development and empower the citizens of India.
To conclude, the cost of constructing the new Parliament is still unknown. Tata Projects received the first contract for Rs 861.9 crore, but by the time the project got underway, the cost had risen to Rs 971 crore. Government representatives claim the price has increased to Rs 1,200 crore since then. This sum includes Rs 200 crore for the pieces of art that the Culture Ministry purchased. The government has not yet disclosed the ultimate finishing cost.
