On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel visited the Morbi bridge collapse site in Gujarat. 

When Morbi was hit by lightning, the PM visited with people working in rescue and relief operations. The search and rescue operation is underway in the Machchhu river. PM Modi and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel also paid a visit to the Morbi Civil Hospital to meet with the wounded.

How Many People were Affected by the Morbi Bridge Collapse?

At least 135 people were killed, including women and children. Over 100 are being treated for injuries when a cable suspension bridge in Morbi town fell on Sunday, plummeting people into the Machchhu River. 

Gujarat police have detained nine persons in connection with the collapse of a pedestrian Morbi bridge disaster that killed at least 135 people. They were executives from Oreva, the firm that reconstructed the bridge, ticket dealers, and security guards.

Four of those held are workers of a company hired to repair the Morbi Bridge. Hundreds were atop the structure when the Morbi bridge collapsed, sending people screaming for aid into the dark river below. The prospect of discovering additional survivors is dwindling. Many children, women, and the elderly are among the deceased.

What is the PM’s Take on the Morbi Bridge Accident?

The Prime Minister already said there would be no slack in rescue and relief activities On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presided over a high-level meeting at Raj Bhavan in Gandhinagar to assess the situation in Morbi.

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Bhai Patel, Chief Secretary and DGP of Gujarat, Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi, and other senior officials from the state’s Home Department and Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority attended the high-level meeting.

The Prime Minister promised the victims that justice would be served quickly and ordered a complete and transparent investigation into every element of the tragedy to bring those responsible for the disaster to justice.

Following an official PIB statement, “The PM said the need of the hour is to conduct a detailed and extensive inquiry that would determine all factors pertaining to this disaster.” 

During a review meeting with officials and ministers at the superintendent of the police office, Modi said unequivocally that the authorities should provide all possible aid to the affected families. It stated, “The PM informed the authorities to extend all the possible help to the affected families and ensure that they get all possible assistance in this tragic hour.”

Gujarat is the home state of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has pledged compensation to victims’ families. He stated he was “very saddened by the incident,” and that the cause would be investigated extensively.
