Union Minister Urges Chhattisgarh Government to Avoid Cess on Hydro Power Projects
In a recent review meeting in Raipur, the Union Minister for Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal, made an impassioned appeal to the Chhattisgarh government to refrain from imposing cess on hydro power projects and Pump Storage Projects. This appeal, part of his ongoing efforts to alleviate financial burdens for consumers, comes on the heels of his one-month anniversary in the new government.
Focusing on the Power Sector
The review meeting, attended by Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma, Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu, and senior officials from relevant ministries and state bodies, delved into various aspects of the power sector.
During his address, Manohar Lal underscored the advancements in the power sector achieved under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He highlighted initiatives like the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gram Jyoti Yojana and Saubhagya, which have brought electricity to remote, rural areas. He also emphasized the importance of the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), which aims to enhance the financial viability of DISCOMs (Distribution Companies) and reduce technical losses to ensure a dependable and affordable electricity supply.
Paving the Way for Progress
Discussions during the meeting encompassed various topics, including Chhattisgarh’s progress under the RDSS, power sector reforms, the role of electricity in enhancing the quality of life, and issues related to NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation) and coal blocks. State officials provided updates on ongoing initiatives and challenges, facilitating a comprehensive review of the power sector.
Protecting Consumers from Escalating Tariffs
Manohar Lal’s focus on avoiding new financial burdens on hydro power and Pump Storage Projects stems from his concern for consumers. He cautioned that the imposition of such measures could significantly escalate consumer tariffs, burdening already financially strained households.
The Union Minister stressed that efforts should be made to reduce AT&C (Aggregate Technical and Commercial) losses of DISCOMs to below 10%. Lower losses would not only alleviate financial strains on DISCOMs but also contribute to overall efficiency in the power sector.
By urging the Chhattisgarh government to reconsider the imposition of cess on hydro power projects and Pump Storage Projects, Manohar Lal demonstrates a commitment to sustainable development in the power sector. His appeals align with the government’s efforts to bring affordable and reliable electricity to all corners of the country.
A Move Towards a Brighter and Affordable Energy Future
As discussions and dialogues continue to shape the power sector’s future, it is crucial for state governments to weigh their decisions carefully. Avoiding unnecessary financial burdens on projects like hydro power and Pump Storage Projects remains a significant step towards achieving the vision of an inclusive, sustainable, and affordable energy future for all.
