Smart City Pune: Mission, Objective, Projects, and Current Status

Pune-Smart-City

Pune Municipal Corporation or PMC has been acknowledged as one of the top 100 smart cities by the government of India. This was mainly due to the visions and projects undertaken by Pune Municipal Corporation to revamp the city in terms of infrastructure, livability, traffic management, and much more. This appreciation has further motivated the Pune Smart City to devise plans and schemes to extend its development to a much-improved standard. However, since its induction into the Smart City list, Pune has been entrusted with the formulation of development plans on its own. There will be a more extensive review process for the upcoming smart city competition where the top 20 cities will be shortlisted. Pune Municipal Corporation is counting on its residents to assist the city in becoming one of the top potential cities in India.

Pune Smart City Objectives

Pune is a prime city that attracts an array of individuals and families for various reasons, including job opportunities, post-retirement settlement, tourism, and much more. It is only a given that the city council would think to improve the standard of living for its residents. Pune aims to steer its wheel towards a “future city” that not only improves its livable conditions but does so efficiently by assimilating eco-friendly and green neighbourhoods along with the latest technologies. This vision can be deduced from the following Pune Smart city objectives.

  • Conduct thorough research on citizens’ requirements in terms of social infrastructure. This involves locating what people find the ideal on the livability factor. The Pune Smart City board has devised a system incorporating nine phases, the most extensive format for understanding how residents rate their livability index. So far, this has been successful on the implementation front, with more than a 50% coverage rate.
  • Finetune the balance between the ideal and the achievable. One of the primary objectives involves finding common ground for desirable development and practicality. It is only logical that authorities aim for the highest possible quality of development with the lowest possible cost.
  • Becoming self-sufficient in terms of funding. Many times, cities constantly needed financial support from the central and state governments. However, it may not always be feasible for the providers to acknowledge. In such times, it would be ideal for cities to aim to become self-sufficient in monetary resources by focusing on raising funds on their own.
  • One of the basic requirements for a city to be termed a smart city is to incorporate information and communication technology. Consequently, Pune city aims to extensively involve modern computing technologies to effectively enable a technology-driven ecosystem.
  • Look for efficient means to transition from the planning phase to the execution phase.
