PMC Set to Construct Y-Shaped Flyover and Grade Separator in Pune’s Shastrinagar Chowk
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced its plans to ease traffic congestion on Ahmednagar Road by constructing a ‘Y’ shaped flyover and grade separator at Shastrinagar Chowk. The new infrastructure project aims to address the increasing traffic woes in the area.
Planned for Four Years, Construction Set to Begin in September
According to PMC officials, the project was initially planned four years ago, but due to changing circumstances, the design of the flyover and grade separator is being updated by the consultants. The civic body expects actual construction work to commence in September.
Currently, the PMC is in the process of planning, conducting traffic surveys, and performing soil testing as per the Detailed Project Report (DPR). These preliminary preparations are essential in ensuring the success and efficiency of the flyover and grade separator.
Improvements Following Dismantling of Ahmednagar Road BRT
Originally, the plan called for the widening of the road to accommodate the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) route lane. However, with the dismantling of the Ahmednagar Road BRT on this stretch, there is now approximately 7 meters of available land for the construction of the flyover. This development eliminates the necessity for road widening, resulting in a more streamlined and cost-effective project.
Abhijit Ambekar, the executive engineer of the special projects department, explained, “We are currently considering a Y-shaped flyover and grade separator at Shastrinagar Chowk, with additional designs to be proposed by the consultant for PMC to finalize.” The revised design will take into account the updated circumstances and available space while ensuring an efficient flow of traffic.
Necessary Clearances Obtained
At the initial stages of planning, the flyover and subway project faced a hurdle due to its proximity to the historical Aga Khan Palace. A No Objection Certificate (NOC) was required from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). To secure the necessary approval, an audio-visual presentation was made to the National Monuments Authority in Delhi on April 5, 2024.
The efforts bore fruit as the central and state archaeology departments granted the required NOC, clearing the path for the project to proceed. With the necessary clearances in hand, the PMC can now move forward confidently with the construction of the much-needed flyover and grade separator at Shastrinagar Chowk.
Once completed, this infrastructure project is expected to significantly alleviate traffic congestion on Ahmednagar Road. It will provide a smoother, more efficient commute for residents, reducing travel time and enhancing overall transportation connectivity. The PMC’s dedication to addressing the increasing traffic issues showcases a commitment to the betterment of the city’s infrastructure and an improved quality of life for its citizens.
