Revitalization and Progress: Minister Sworn In for Dibrugarh’s Development

Sonowal Sworn In as Ex-Officio Member of Digboi and Makum Municipalities

Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, recently took on the role of ex-officio member of Digboi and Makum municipalities. As the Member of Parliament for the Dibrugarh Lok Sabha constituency, Sonowal has been actively involved in its development, unveiling a comprehensive vision for its progress.

Dibrugarh’s Historical Prosperity

In his address, Sonowal praised Dibrugarh for its historical prosperity, highlighting its position as one of India’s wealthiest districts even prior to independence. This prosperity can largely be attributed to the district’s abundant resources, such as tea, coal, wood, and petroleum.

A Vision of Progress

Drawing attention to the neglect endured by Dibrugarh under successive Congress governments after independence, Sonowal credited the revitalization of the region to proactive measures implemented during the administrations of Prime Ministers Vajpayee and Modi. These measures have greatly improved rail, road, air, and water connectivity in Dibrugarh, leading to industrialization and increased employment opportunities for the youth. Such advancement aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s inclusive agenda of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas.”

Focusing on Digboi and Makum Municipalities

Sonowal emphasized the significant role played by Digboi and Makum municipalities in promoting comprehensive infrastructure development in their respective areas. The government has made it a priority to enhance these heritage zones, with Digboi Municipality even gaining national recognition for its efforts. Additionally, plans are underway to expand the capacity of Digboi Refinery, which holds the distinction of being Asia’s oldest oil refinery.

A Need for Vision and Goodwill

Expressing disappointment at the lack of foresight and goodwill displayed by the previous government, Sonowal specifically called out the neglect faced by Digboi Refinery in capacity expansion initiatives. On the other hand, he lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his historic decision to increase the refinery’s capacity from 0.69 million tons to 1 million tons. This move, both recognizing the refinery’s importance and preserving its heritage, is projected to have a significant impact on the region’s growth and development.

With Sarbananda Sonowal at the helm, serving as an ex-officio member of Digboi and Makum municipalities, residents can look forward to continued progress and a strong focus on comprehensive infrastructure development. The example set by these municipalities, along with the expansion of Digboi Refinery, will undoubtedly contribute to the overall growth of the Dibrugarh Lok Sabha constituency, and further align with the Prime Minister’s mission of inclusive development for all.
