On Tuesday morning, Rishi Sunak won the race to become the UK’s third Prime Minister this year. He is the first non-white person to hold the job and vows to fix the mistakes made by the ex-PM Liz Truss. This first Hindu UK PM was invited to Buckingham Palace by King Charles III to form a government. Rishi Sunak, age 42 years, is the youngest British Prime Minister in 210 years. Rishi Sunak reached Buckingham Palace in a Range Rover with his wife under the security of Scotland Yard. He first shook hands with Royal Household staff and went inside with the King in his audience room, where he was initiated to form a government. After meeting the King at the Palace, he travelled to Downing Street to address the nation outside the popular black door for the first time as UK’s PM.

While addressing, Sunak vowed to ‘build an economy that embraces the opportunities of Brexit, whereas businesses invest, innovate and create jobs’. He further added to place economic stability and confidence as the government’s main agenda and warned of difficult decisions to come, pinpointing how he had helped businesses and people during the pandemic. Rishi promised the same level of compassion when dealing with challenges as the new PM. He, along with his wife, Akshata, daughter of Infosys founder and Indian billionaire Narayana Murthy, are multimillionaires and are estimated to be amongst the 250 wealthiest British people by the Times of London.

Outgoing Prime Minister Liz Truss delivered her last speech as PM the same morning before seeing King Charles III to tender her resignation formally. She practised poor politics from the beginning of her tenure, and her refusal to appoint anyone to the government has left her with a limited talent pool. Apart from this, the economy, along with the crashing confidence of her Conservative colleagues and the arrival of Jeremy Hunt as a chancellor, forced Liz Truss to resign as UK Prime Minister after just a month and a half.

Rishi Sunak said that he was elected as a PM to fix the mistakes made by Truss. According to him, Truss was not wrong on her part to wish to improve growth in the country, but some mistakes were made. He promised the audience his government would have professionalism, integrity and accountability and assured to build up trust. Rishi delivered the speech in a compassionate tone as if he was trying to get the whole of Britain behind him, saying, ‘I understand how difficult this moment is’. As the UK’s new PM, Sunak faces a huge challenge to rebuild economic stability, but he believes that he has always lived up to the demands of the high office and will continue to do the same.

Huw Merriman MP has previously worked with Rishi and told the BBC that Sunak, as a PM, would run the country like a Chief Executive would run his office. The Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi, congratulated Rishi on October 24, 2022, for the historic victory and extended unique Diwali wishes to UK Indians.
