In February, an artificial intelligence bot is expected to advise the defendant for the very first time during a hearing in court. According to reports, the world’s first-ever non-human lawyer, ie. a robotic lawyer will run on the smartphone of the defendant via the ‘DoNotPay’ app and will be listening to the arguments in court on a real-time basis, telling the defendant what and how to say via earpiece.
The dates of the hearing have been set in the month of February, however, the exact dates, the locations of the court nor the name of the defendant have been disclosed yet.
The idea for inventing a robotic lawyer came from the company DoNotPay, which was founded by Joshua Browder in the year 2015 in California. The founder pursued his education at Stanford University as a computer scientist and made this app to tackle issues related to parking tickets. Joshua Browder founded DoNotPay in 2015 as a chatbot that offers legal services to people dealing with problems of fines, late fees, and parking tickets, but the company shifted to AI in 2020.
The app is widely used throughout the United Kingdom and the United States since its release, assisting users in writing letters dealing with various different issues such as complaint letters to a local authority or business, compensation claims, applying for tourist visas, and various other issues. The founder Joshua Browder said that the use of ‘DoNotPay’ increased dramatically during the pandemic.
Consumers who want to contest a ticket, request a refund, or fight spam calls can sign up for DoNotPay on an annual subscription for $36 which is approx 3000 rupees in Indian currency. After signing up, users can make use of the DoNotPay app’s chatbot powered by artificial intelligence to challenge their claims
