State Governments Renew Promise to Expedite Pending Mumbai-Goa Highway Project

Mumbai-Goa Highway project has been pending construction for over 14 years, causing frustration among commuters and sparking controversies. With unified BJP governance in Maharashtra and Goa, citizens hope the project will finally see completion.

Delays and Setbacks: A History of Mumbai-Goa Highway Project

The 555-kilometre highway, connecting Mumbai with Goa, was originally planned under a build-operate-transfer BOT model. However, issues with forest clearances, land acquisition, and subpar construction work have led to delayed completion.

Originally divided into 10 construction packages, the project faced a series of setbacks. The existing road is in poor condition, causing many to opt for the Satara route instead.

Broken Promises and Renewed Commitment

The National Highways Authority of India NHAI and state Public Works Department PWD recently announced a new target for completion in the next two years. The then PWD Minister Ravindra Chavan acknowledged challenges and promised completion within the allotted timeframe.

Despite repeated delays, citizens remain cautiously optimistic about the project’s completion under unified party governance.

Key Segments and Timelines: A Glimmer of Hope

The highway expansion includes 14 bridges and surrounding service roads. Construction on key sections remains behind schedule, with the target of completion set for January 26, Republic Day.

One of the most awaited sections is the twin tunnels at Kashedi Ghat, designed to improve safety and speed on the mountainous stretch. Officials claim that construction on both tunnels is in its final phase.

A Critical Route for Industries and Tourism

The Mumbai-Goa Highway serves as a vital route for industrial, trade, and tourism sectors, with 471 kilometres falling within Maharashtra. Despite the pending construction, the highway remains a critical lifeline for the regions it passes through.
