Thane Metro Receives Government Approval for Detailed Project Report
The Thane Metro, officially known as the Thane Integral Ring Metro Project, has received a nod from the central government for its Detailed Project Report (DPR). Estimated to cost Rs 122 billion, this mega infrastructure project aims to provide efficient transportation in Thane city. With a distance coverage of 29 kilometres and 22 stations, the Thane Metro will greatly improve the connectivity within the city.
Overview of the Thane Metro Project
The foundation stone for the Thane Metro was laid by the Prime Minister in December 2018. The metro will encircle Thane city in a ring-shaped route, spanning a total length of 29 kilometres. The majority of the metro line, spanning 26 kilometres, will be elevated and feature 20 stations. The remaining 3-kilometre stretch will be underground, housing 2 stations.
The Thane Metro Line will offer convenient interchanges with Mumbai Metro’s Green Line (Line 4) and Orange Line (Line 5). Additionally, it will provide a direct connection with the Thane city central railway station. With these prominent connections, the metro system aims to alleviate traffic congestion and streamline commuting for residents.
Expected Ridership and Future Growth
According to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, the Thane Metro is anticipated to serve a ridership of approximately 6.47 lakh (647,000) passengers by the year 2029. As the metro network further expands and gains popularity, it is projected to witness a ridership of 7.61 lakh (761,000) and 8.72 lakh (872,000) passengers in 2035 and 2045, respectively.
Technical Bids and General Consultant
To ensure smooth progress during the project implementation, MahaMetro, the implementing body, has invited technical bids for the appointment of a Detailed Design Consultant (DDC) for six elevated stations. These stations will be located between Dr Kashinath Ghanekar Natyagrah and the waterfront area.
Furthermore, the General Consultant contract for the Thane Metro project has received a solitary bid from AECOM-Systra MVA Consultant-Consulting Engineer Group. This demonstrates the high level of interest and competence in participating in the Thane Metro project.
Awaiting Fare, Funds, and Pricing Information
While the project itself is progressing, various vital aspects such as fares, funding, and pricing for the Thane Metro are yet to be announced. This critical information will determine the feasibility and affordability of the metro system for the general public.
The Thane Metro project is a significant milestone for improved urban transportation in Thane city. With increasing ridership projections and connectivity to key metro lines and railway stations, this project promises to streamline commuting and alleviate traffic congestion. As the implementation progresses, details regarding fares, funding, and pricing will be eagerly awaited by the public.
