Following the cessation of transit, as described in section 99 of the Railways Act, the Indian Railways will not be held liable for the loss, destruction, damage, deterioration, or non-delivery of animals, according to the policy.

Here are 10 easy steps if you are planning a train journey with your pet –

  1. You must first reserve the entire coupe of two or four berths in an AC First-Class or First-Class compartment if pet owners are travelling with pets. Pets are not permitted to travel in any other train compartments.
  2. Dog boxes are allowed in second-class luggage for passengers to transport their pets. Dog boxes on the train are available on Rajdhani and Shatabdi Express.
  3. Carrying your pet in a dog box on the train will cost you Rs. 30 per kg to have them shipped in a goods box, but if you want to take your pet on a coach trip along with you, you need to pay Rs.60 per kg.
  4. No pet reservations can be made in advance. Arrive at the train station at least an hour or two before the scheduled time of your train. Reservations can be made at the counters one hour before the train departs.
  5. Ensure your pet has received all necessary vaccinations. Consult your vet in case, travelling with an older pet.
  6. Submit all required documents, including your ID and your pet’s recent vaccination certificate. Pay the fees and obtain your receipt.
  7. Present the first portion of your receipt to the guard coach, who is often at the back of the train. When you arrive at your destination, deboard your dog by handing the guard the receipt.
  8. Pets are not permitted in the AC two-tier, AC three-tier, AC chair car, sleeper class, or second-class compartments, as per the rules.
  9. Ensure to carry food and water for your pet, as the railways do not provide the same. Bring your pet’s favourite toy to reduce travel stress.
  10. Carry all your pet’s essentials, such as a collar, leash, pet pads, bowls, blankets, room freshener, disposable bags, and a muzzle if required, depending on your pet’s requirements.
