The Union Minister of State for Railways and Jal Sakthi, V. Somanna, recently visited Puducherry railway station to inspect the ongoing redevelopment projects. The purpose of his visit was to review the progress of the redevelopment work and assess the improvements in passenger amenities and infrastructure at the station.

Significant Upgrades Planned for Puducherry Railway Station

The redevelopment work at Puducherry railway station is being executed at a hefty cost of Rs 92 crores. The project aims to completely transform the station and enhance its facilities for commuters. One of the main aspects of the redevelopment plan is the construction of two main buildings with centralized air conditioning, providing passengers with an experience similar to that of airport facilities. Additionally, separate drop-off and pick-up bays will be created for the convenience of travelers.

The Transformation Plan

The redevelopment project includes several key elements that will both modernize and upgrade the station. Existing platforms and platform shelters will be renovated and improved, providing a more comfortable environment for passengers. Moreover, two new Foot Overbridges will be built, enhancing accessibility within the station. The plans also encompass the construction of a new parcel office, drivers’ room, operational building, and parking areas for vehicles such as four-wheelers, two-wheelers, taxis, and autorickshaws. The inclusion of a sewage treatment plant clearly demonstrates a commitment to sustainability and environmental consciousness.

An Inspection of the Progress and Safety Measures

They provided Somanna with a detailed update on the project’s features. It was brought to the Minister’s attention that every effort was being made to complete the work within the timeline specified, while also minimizing any disruptions to passenger services.
