Urban Development Department Approves BBMP’s Ambitious Road Reconstruction Plan With Sky-High Price Tag

BBMP Receives Approval for Rs 6.94 Billion Road Repair Project

The Urban Development Department UDD has given its approval to the Bangalore Bruhat Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) for a comprehensive road repair project. The project, estimated to cost Rs 6.94 billion, aims to repair 389.7 km of arterial and sub-arterial roads in the city.

Scope of the Project

The road repair project is set to commence in January 2025 and will encompass various components. These include milling damaged roads, de-silting and re-roofing drains to enhance rainwater flow, installing pipes in areas lacking roadside drains, constructing pavements with concrete bases, and installing and leveling curb stones to delineate road lines and footpaths.

Phased Approach for Funding

To manage the funding for the project, BBMP plans to execute the works over two financial years. An amount of Rs 3 billion will be allocated from the 2024-25 budget and an additional Rs 3.94 billion from the 2025-26 budget.

Allocation Based on Zones

Out of the total 389 km of roads to be repaired, the Mahadevapura zone, which is part of the IT corridor, has been allocated the highest funding of Rs 1.75 billion. This zone accounts for approximately 26% of the total length of roads to be repaired. In comparison, Dasarahalli zone will receive the least allocation, with Rs 200 million allocated for the repair of 14 km of roads.

Achieving Comprehensive Resurfacing

BBMP Chief Commissioner, Tushar Giri Nath, emphasized that numerous roads in the city have not undergone significant development or resurfacing for over five years. This has led to recurring potholes and patchy stretches, affecting the smooth flow of traffic. To address these issues comprehensively, the agency aims to carry out extensive resurfacing as part of the road repair project.

Tendering Process and Compliance

With the approval from the Urban Development Department, BBMP will now initiate the tendering process for the road repair project, which is expected to begin by Thursday. The process is expected to conclude by the end of December 2024, allowing work to commence in January 2025. The Urban Development Department has directed that the works be packaged into contracts of no less than Rs 100 million each. Furthermore, it has instructed that the procurement process adheres to the Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurement Act, 1999, and the associated rules framed in 2000.

This significant road repair project sanctioned by the Urban Development Department and BBMP is a proactive step towards addressing the deteriorating condition of the city’s roads. With careful planning and implementation, residents of Bangalore can look forward to smoother and safer commutes in the coming years.
