Kashi, also known as Varanasi, is all set to unveil the third-largest urban transit ropeway in the world. After Bolivia’s La Paz and Mexico, Kashi will soon boast this state-of-the-art transportation system, which is expected to open on the auspicious occasion of Dev Diwali. This move is hailed as a significant step in improving connectivity and reducing traffic issues in the city.
A Convenient Route for Travelers: The first segment of the City Ropeway project will simplify and speed up the commute for people in Kashi, particularly those traveling from Varanasi Junction Cantt Railway Station to Rath Yatra. With the opening of this segment, commuters can expect a faster and hassle-free journey during their daily travel. Dev Diwali, scheduled on November 15 this year, will be the perfect occasion to inaugurate the ropeway and offer visitors to Varanasi a unique experience of traveling through this modern transit system.
Relieving Varanasi’s Traffic Woes: The development of the City Ropeway in Varanasi is part of a collaborative effort by Swiss company Berthollet and the regional government. With an investment of Rs 8.07 billion, the project aims to address Varanasi’s traffic-related challenges and provide sustainable transportation solutions. Officials have expedited the installation of machinery imported from Switzerland, ensuring a smooth setup for the ropeway. Stations and towers are being constructed at a rapid pace, and a trial run is expected to take place shortly.
Fly Over Varanasi Effortlessly: The City Ropeway in Kashi promises to be an efficient means of transportation for residents and tourists alike. Passengers can expect gondola services at intervals of one-and-a-half to two minutes, ensuring minimal waiting time. The ropeway will have the capacity to carry three thousand individuals in a single direction per hour, resulting in a total movement of six thousand travelers in both directions. The estimated travel time from Godaulia to Cantt Railway Station is around 16 minutes, with the ropeway operating for 16 hours a day. Approximately 150 trolley cars will navigate at an estimated height of 45 to 50 meters. Each trolley can carry up to 10 passengers, accommodating a sizable number of commuters throughout the day.
A Boost for Tourism in Varanasi: Tourism in Varanasi flourishes during the festive period of Dev Diwali, attracting visitors from all over the world. Prakash Gaur, the Chief Executive Officer of National Highway Logistics Private Limited (NHLML), expressed the company’s commitment to ensuring the operational readiness of the ropeway by Dev Diwali. This will provide both residents and tourists with a convenient, pollution-free mode of transportation, enhancing their travel experience.
Progress and Upcoming Milestones: Recent undertakings have showcased significant milestones in the City Ropeway project. The installation of an anchor bolt at Vidyapeeth station and the placement of acceleration and de-acceleration conveyors demonstrate progress in infrastructure development. The process of installing the ropeway’s primary component, the rope itself, is scheduled to commence soon. In addition, 16 towers are diligently under construction, further manifesting the rapid advancement of Varanasi’s transport system. The third-largest urban transit ropeway in Kashi is poised to revolutionize travel, alleviate congestion, and evolve Varanasi into a modern city without losing its rich cultural heritage. As the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath continues to bring Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to fruition, tackling urban challenges head-on and paving the way for a brighter future.
