The municipal ranking for Varanasi 2021 brought some great news for the city, as it ranked first in the ‘Skoch State of Governance Report 2021’ in the city administration category, followed by Thane (Maharashtra) and Bhidannagar (West Bengal) in the second position and Vapi (Gujarat) and Chennai (Tamil Nadu) secured the third position jointly. Other cities from Uttar Pradesh that secured a place in the report are Agra, which came in fourth, Lucknow in 10th and Kanpur the 15th.
SKOCH Award, established in 2003, honouring individuals, initiatives, and organisations that go above and beyond for the better future of India. SKOCH Award’s recipients range from major politicians, famous laureates, and the common man. The award was introduced by The chairman of Skoch Group, Sameer Kochhar, who fervently supports social, financial, and digital inclusiveness. This award recognises the outstanding contributions the individual or an entity has made to society. Recently, the ‘Star of Governance-Skoch Award in Municipal Governance’ was received by the Chief General Manager of Varanasi Smart City, Dr D Vasudevan, at an event in Delhi. President Ram Nath Kovind felicitated the awardees at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.

Earlier in March 2021, the union ministry released the smart city rankings of 100 Smart Cities, in which Prayagraj was ranked 15th. According to the list, five cities in the state were among the top 20. Varanasi secured 118.44 points to bag third place in the country, while Agra was at number four with 115.90 points. Varanasi jumped to the first position with all the new smart projects and ongoing developments.
The rankings are based on the report of development works undertaken by respective cities. These rankings are also decided by the Human Resource and Development ministry along with some jury members.
