West Bengal Housing Board started functioning from 5th May 1973 and is working efficiently to date. The board has already constructed several housing units and is already offered to the residents of the state, while some are still ongoing. Flats allocation under the West Bengal Housing Board is categorized into five parts depending on the monthly family income.
- If the monthly family income is below 10,000 then it is considered to be EWS (Economically Weaker Section),
- For LIG (Lower Income Group) it is between Rs 10001 and Rs 15000.
- MIG (L) (Middle Income Group) is having an eligibility criterion of Rs 15001 to Rs 25000
- For MIG(U) it is Rs 25001 to Rs 40000.
- For HIG (Higher Income Group), the monthly family income should be above Rs 40000.
When the projects are completed and are ready to sale, WBHB calls for applications through their official website wbhousingboard.in or through the newspaper. West Bengal housing board application form gets available from several banks as mentioned within the notification. The applicants need to purchase the forms along with the “Book of General Terms and Conditions”. The application money and the income eligibility applies for the purchase of flats are classified according to the income groups. Fill the application with valid pieces of information and submit it along with all the required documents to the same bank.
After the completion of application submission, the date and venue for the lottery are provided. All the shortlisted or waiting list applicants should be present on the day an hour before the scheduled time. Only one candidate per application is allowed of the event and he/she must carry a valid photo ID. The documents required during application submission are identity proof, address proof, and original copy of income certificate. Schemes under the Housing Department
- West Bengal Government is providing free shelters to the Economically Weaker Section of people in the rural & non-municipal urban areas. Co-ordination of seven other government departments – fisheries Department, Backward Classes Welfare Department, Minority Affairs & Madrasah Education Department, Forest Department, Sundarban Affairs Department, and Paschimanchal Unnayan affairs department, have executed the scheme called “Gitanjali”.
- L&LR Department has launched “Nija Griha Nija Bhumi” for EWS people.
- “Amar Thikana” scheme is launched by Panchayat and Rural Development Department, for families having a monthly income of less than Rs 6000.
- 34,758 housing units have been constructed in 11 backward districts of West Bengal under the Backward Region Grant Fund, and are allocated to people who are enlisted in the BPL category.
- Other Schemes include L.I.G Housing schemes and M.I.G Housing Schemes.
- The two new schemes are “Nijashree” and Working Women’s Hostel.

- WBHB has constructed several projects in and around the capital city “Kolkata”. The two popular among them in New Town are –
- West Bengal housing board eastern high project constructed over 3075 hectares of land is offering ownership flats. This housing complex is having 36 2-storied flats and 402 dwelling units of different sizes. Besides being just a shelter it is providing international standard township facilities like a residential complex and IT hubs, and several other modern facilities. - The West Bengal housing board Karunamoyee includes three projects Karunamoyee ph-I, ph-II, and Ph-III in Saltlake. Karunamoyee Ph-I provides 336 housing units for LIG,464 units for Middle Income Group, and 80 units for HIG. Karunamoyee Ph-II offers 200 units for MIG, and 440 dwelling units for Higher Income Group. Karunamoyee Ph-III provides 248 flats for MIG, and 96 flats for HIG. These are well decorated, affordable, and sustainable flats, having a prime location and are connected to many emergency services as well as important zones of the state.
- Under the West Bengal housing board Durgapur, Shilpakanan Housing Project, Phase-I, Phase-II, and Phase-III, located near Sukumar Banerjee Road, Bidhannagar, in the vicinity of Bengal College of Engineering & Technology and Private Management college. It is having a connection with Dr Megnad Saha Sarani, Biplabi Rash Behari Basu Sarani and Hospital Road. Each of the projects is providing flats for Higher Income Group, with high-quality infrastructure, improved facilities, and modern township amenities.
- One of the completed projects under the West Bengal housing board Siliguri is the Himalayan Kanya Housing Project in Sevok Road. Its location is one of the important factors for its popularity.
