Every year on June 25, World Vitiligo Day 2022 is celebrated to raise knowledge about a rare skin infection known as ‘Vitiligo.’ As per research findings, this disease affects between 1% and 2% of the world’s population. Moreover, the disease is quite common across India.

This year, the Indian Vitiligo organisations celebrated National Vitiligo Day 2022 by setting up an awareness camp at Kisan Bhawan, Faridabad. 

Moreover, over 1 lakh people have been recorded for Vitiligo in India. As a non-profit organisation,  aims to help vitiligo warriors by decreasing the myths associated with the disease in India. Moreover, availing treatments more accessible and affordable for all patients alike.

What is Vitiligo?

Vitiligo also term as Leukoderma. Melanin is a complicated polymer derived from the amino acid tyrosine. It is a chronic skin disease that causes the forming of white or light spots on the individual’s skin. Vitiligo develops when the melanin yield in the cells dies or halts. Vitiligo is a non-contagious and non-life dangerous disorder. While certain medicines like Hydroquinone can help to cure. Although the condition can not entirely be curable, some of the percentage amounts can reoccur. It can also lead to premature grey on the body as well as on the scalp.

Cause of Vitiligo

However, This disorder is caused by a lack of melanin. Pregnancy, Addison’s illness, and sunlight exposure could darken your skin. When your body produces insufficient melanin, skin becomes light in colour. Vitiligo is a skin disease which causes spots on the skin. There are numerous false assumptions about this illness. Several individuals assume that the disorder can be passed from individual to individual via touch. This, however, is incorrect.

Why is World Vitiligo Day Celebrated on June 25?

On June 25, the world honours the survivors and remembers Michael Jackson, who struggled with this rare skin disease. He passed away on June 25, 2009.

History of World Vitiligo Day

In 2011, the first World Vitiligo Day was demonstrated. It was also recognised as ‘Vitiligo Purple Fun Day’ and ‘Vitiligo Awareness Day.’ Steve Haragadon, the owner of the Vitiligo Friends channel, proposed the concept. It was eventually created by Ogo Maduewesi, a Nigerian Vitiligo patient and the leader and executive director of the Vitiligo Assistance and Awareness Foundation (VITSAF).

Treatments for Vitiligo Disease

The Vitiligo treatment can be improved but isn’t entirely curable. Some common ways to treat the disease include:

  • Oral medicines
  • Before going out in the sun, do not forget to apply sunscreens.
  • Vitamin A-rich food can also help increase the production of melanin levels in the body, such as fruits, carrots, sweet potatoes, fish, and meat.
