Expressways are the new fancy thing in the country, aren’t they? One such ritzy roadway is the Yamuna Expressway connecting the national capital to the city of Taj, Agra. The Yamuna express highway was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Akhilesh Yadav and this was done through a video link while he was at his residence in Lucknow. To provide smooth connectivity and reduction in time of traveling, this expressway also known as Taj Expressway was laid to construction. And it did fulfill the motive by reducing the travel duration of Delhi to Agra and vice versa to two and a half hours.
The Yamuna expressway project took almost 47 months and a whopping ₹13,300 crores to get completed and now begins from Greater Noida and ends at Agra passing through Mathura and Aligarh. Multiple new projects like the Formula One Track, Jaypee’s Sports City, and real estate developments have seen their way in the area post the successful running of the Yamuna expressway.
Jaypee Infratech, the group behind the development of this swanky expressway was surely at huge stakes because its success would have defined the procurement of future real estate projects.

About the Construction of Yamuna Express Highway
The Yamuna Expressway project is a roadway laid in the Uttar Pradesh state of India which is of length 165.5 kilometers. Its connectivity is between Noida to Agra while passing through Mathura and Aligarh and it came into running on 9th August 2012. Earlier, the Yamuna expressway was known as the Taj Expressway due to its connectivity of Greater Noida which is a part of the NCT to the beautiful city of Taj, Agra. In the year 2008, the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority which was formed by the state government renamed it to be Yamuna Expressway.
The construction of this expressway has reduced the time of traveling from Delhi to Agra by about 100 minutes which means that an approximate distance of 210 kilometers can now be covered in roughly two and a half hours. The Yamuna Express Project has reduced traffic congestion on the Old GT Road, National Highway-2 and it has been able to provide a smooth corridor for traffic coming down to the cities and center of the Eastern side of Yamuna. Initially, the project was supposed to be of a budget that was INR 22.5 billion, but due to construction cost rise and overrun, it came to be ₹13,300 crores.
Safety and Speed Limit at the Yamuna Express Highway
The expressway has multiple barricades controlled through access and also 50 flyovers and 60 crossing points for pedestrians. Along with these, there are CCTV cameras installed and SOS booths are present to ensure complete safety. Some other measures taken up by the YEA to avoid accidents on road are the following:
Time Booth Installation
The Yamuna expressway authority is on the plans of setting up a timing booth at all zero points and on both sides of the roadway. This will assist the concerned authorities in determining the boarding time of every vehicle and then check about the flouting in the speed norms and issuance of challans. With this new system, if a vehicle covers the distance of the expressway before the stipulated time, then the owner will have to pay a fine.
Crash Beam Barriers
These barriers are being set up on each side of the dividers present on the Yamuna Expressway. With these barriers, if an accident occurs, the vehicle will not move to the other side of the divider. Thereby reducing the intensity of the accident and saving lives. It is a company based out of Gujarat that is in charge of the crash beam barrier setup.
The speed limit on the Yamuna Expressway is 100 kmph for small vehicles and 60 kmph for heavy vehicles. And the last lane on the right is reserved to overtake only.
Yamuna Express Highway Connectivity
The connectivity of the metro rail line has gotten a green flag from the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority. The route of the metro station will be from Pari Chowk to Sector 18 and Sector 20 of Yamuna Expressway. These sectors are the first ones to be developed by the authority.
The Yamuna Expressway is connected to the Agra Lucknow expressway via the inner Agra ring road which in turn reduces the time of traveling for people coming from Lucknow.
Impact of the Yamuna Expressway Project on Real Estate
Since the commencement of the project, the value of land around the 165 kilometers radius of the expressway has gone up tremendously. And not only do the land rates go high, but many renowned real estate developers have also announced their upcoming projects in that area. Especially, in the National Capital Region, the area around the Yamuna Expressway has become the hub of affordable housing.
This expressway has also been in the economic light ever since its running. To boost the economical aspects of the area more, the government has announced several projects including the Jewar International Airport, Medical Device Park, UP Film City, Toy Park, and Leather Park.
Yamuna Expressway May be renamed After ex- PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee
Since the upcoming elections aren’t that far away, one can expect a political slugfest especially in terms of the Uttar Pradesh expressways and the question of whether the government will change the name of Yamuna Expressway after the former Prime Minister of India, Atal Bihar Vajpayee. As per the news, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will announce the name change on November 25th during the foundation laying occasion of the Noida Airport. If the expressway gets renamed, this will not be the first project to be renamed under the governance of the Bharatiya Janata Party. In the year 2018, only after a few months of Vajpayee’s demise, the government renamed Ekana International Stadium in Lucknow as Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee International Cricket Stadium.
