About Chandannagar, Kolkata

A town known as the “Little Europe on the Ganges”, Chandannagar is rich with cultural history and foreign remains. An upcoming residential locality 50 km north of Kolkata, Chandannagar, is being built by the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA). Situated on the banks of the Hooghly River (more commonly Ganga), the locality is not densely populated and is a part of the Hooghly district.

The small town has gradually emerged as a hotspot for residential projects with increased cultural significance as a tourist attraction. The region consists of historical monuments with colonial architecture and is well-connected by a well-maintained network of railways and road transport. The locality is a landmark on the river route between Kolkata and Murshidabad and is a great place to relive the colonisation with its comprehensive museums, churches and ancient homesteads.

In addition to its roots in the French colonisation, the town is also famous for its religious Jagaddhatri Puja in reverence of the Goddess Durga and its light craftsmen who are masters of illumination. Their ability to create anything with light bulbs and fairy lights on wired frames run by a rudimentary motor has made the city's lighting decorations famous across the globe. The area offers a close-knit community that is welcoming and warm.

A calm, peaceful and pollution-free locality, Chandannagar may not possess the top-notch amenities that a metropolitan may offer, but it leaves nothing to be desired. With a range of local retail shops and outlets that cover all everyday necessities, the locality has resident Model Schools, quality healthcare facilities with the Chandannagar Hospital and many employment opportunities. A developing locality, Chandannagar offers some very attractive residential projects across the market.

Places To Visit in Chandannagar

The town is called “Little Europe on the Ganges” for its French past; it has multiple churches and heritage museums where locals and residents spend quality time exploring. Some of the most popular attractions are listed below.

Chandannagar Strand

Chandannagar Strand is situated along the banks of the river and is one of the most important pathways in Chandannagar, offering a lovely walk along the calm and serene river. Watch the sunset or rise, read a book by the bank or simply sit admiring the building and lights, the Strand is a brilliant mix of Indo-French Architecture. It has something for all: a meditation centre for relaxing and boating facilities for the willing. A gentle reminder of the beauty of impeccable craftsmanship, the strand is a popular tourist spot for residents and visitors alike.

Sacred Heart Church

The Sacred Heart Church is over 200 years old, a white stone church. Established by the French East India Company, the church was completed in 1844 and designed by the French architect Jacques Duchatz. It looks straight out of the heavens above when you witness the shining white building across a sunset. Just around the corner from Institut de Chandannagar, the 2-storeyed church overlooks a small garden and houses a statue of Jesus.

The church roof is arched, with two towers on either side. Inside are some amazing stained glass windows depicting Jesus Christ's life. Equally impressive and beautiful from the inside, the church is aesthetically pleasing and an equally stunning, peaceful marvel.

Jagadhhatri Puja

An aspect of the Goddess Parvati, Jagatdhari, is worshipped in the Indian states of West Bengal and Orissa. Her worship and rituals form a very important part of the Chandannagar culture and are held with much fanfare. Chandannagar celebrates it in a way that’s as grand as the Durga Puja for over three days. A site to behold, the celebrations are a wonderful representation of faith in its purest form. The people make huge clay idols of the four-armed goddesses on a lion placed inside ornamental marquees. A wholesome competition among the people also arises, each trying to outdo the other. People stream along the roads night and day to see the idols.

The Patal Bari

A unique tourist attraction housed in the cradle of India’s freedom struggle, Patal Bari means underground house. The most amazing feature of the house is that its lowest floor is completely submerged in the Ganga River, almost down to the riverbed, making it a one-of-a-kind monument across the country. It is said that Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru loved the place and has mentioned Patal-Bari in many poems and novels of his.

Chandan Nagar Museum

Featuring many French and British artefacts from colonial rule, the museum is a must-visit spot for history buffs. The museum houses a large collection of antiquities from the Nawab Rule and the French Rule and various galleries dedicated to French furniture and periodic administration.
