ABUT

Abut means any piece of land or building which is next or shares a boundary with another. It means to lean on, or touch.

Definition

Abut means to border or touch along any edge. For example, a property or house may abut one’s plot. It also means to lean on for any support, i.e. like a piece of wood abutting a lamppost for example. It also means to touch alongside any border. It also means termination at any contact point.

Use of Abut in Real Estate

The usage of abut is quite common in real estate. Any land or property that abuts another is when it borders the same or touches it. This is also called the lot line in real estate terminology. Abutting also means that there is no land that intervenes or comes between two plots. Properties with common boundaries or walls are abutting ones. Owners of such properties may have to sometimes pay equivalent shares of the expenditure for any project related to street or area improvement.
