BOROUGH

The word borough derives from the old English burg, which means a fortified settlement. Several other European languages have cognate words which were borrowed from Germanic languages during the middle ages. In Irish, Brog means wall rampart. These are some of the literal meanings, but a borough is an administrative division in English-speaking countries. The term has another meaning; it is a term that designates the self-government walled down, which is in practice and officially used, but the meaning of the term varies widely.

In Alaska, the borough is synonymous with the county. In Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, boroughs are referred to as the incorporated municipality. In Virginia, the borough refers to the division of the city centre under certain circumstances.
