Definition

A lease starting date is a day on which the term of a real estate lease officially begins. It is the day the parties' rights and responsibilities under the lease officially take effect.

This day may coincide with the day the renter begins paying rent. However, it possible that the beginning date won't coincide with the day the tenant begins paying rent if contractors are working on the property or the tenants have agreed to early occupancy date. Different move-in dates, rent beginning dates, and lease commencement dates are permissible within the same lease.

There are situations when the start date of the lease and the end date are both extremely explicit. Sometimes they are described as time ranges in which the lease will start rather than an actual set date. As long as the date stays within predetermined bounds, it acceptable to be flexible or floating.
