Flashing is a term that has a common definition. It means shining all of a sudden, like a light that flashes in an intermittent manner. It could also be a flash of light in the sky for example.
Sheet metal, mostly crafted from aluminum, is used for covering the open masonry or wooden joints of any structure. Flashing is used for combating water penetration along with offering a pathway for drainage between the joints. This meaning was coined in 1782 as per reports.
Flashing is used in the real estate sector in the manner described above, i.e. enabling water seepage or penetration throughout any structure with the help of materials like sheet metal. This is usually done for chimneys and vent pipes among other structures. There are two flashing types, namely embedded and exposed flashing. The latter means exposed partly to the outdoors and mostly crafted from sheet metal. The former may be non-metal or metal and is mostly used over openings, angles of shelves, sills, and more. Some of the other types of flashing include the following:
1. Sill flashing
2. Roof flashing
3. Wall flashing
4. Channel flashing
5. Through wall flashing
6. Pipe flashing
7. Stepped flashing
8. Drip edge (roof edges secured with metal projection)
9. Valley flashing
