GRANNY FLAT

A granny flat is an independent piece of residential property that is typically designed for one or two occupants. A granny flat is a type of self-sufficient living space generally built on the grounds of a single-family housing property. The name “granny flat” comes with the notion that such flats are perfectly suited for the senior or aged members of the family. Granny flats are often used by families who want to accommodate their aging parents and grandparents in close proximity to their own houses. Such granny flats are usually smaller detached properties near family homes. A granny flat may even be attached to the family home itself.

Definition

It should be noted that irrespective of the name, granny flats are not exclusively built for senior members of the family. It is primarily a small-scale independent property that may be built on the same land as an existing family home to serve various purposes. In addition to being an ideal place to accommodate aging family members, it is a suitable place to house live-in domestic help, nannies, or even the younger members of the family. Such properties are also conveniently used as rental units by families that are simply looking to earn some extra cash. However, some state laws may restrict such renting in which case the properties are put to other use.

Use of Granny Flat in Real Estate

Multigenerational housing options are becoming increasingly popular in the real estate market. As a result, the concept of granny flats is also becoming widely acceptable. In the housing industry, such properties are commonly referred to as accessory dwelling units or ADU. According to real estate professionals and developers, properties that have such additional granny flats attached to them are more attractive to clients and are sold effortlessly.

In essence, a granny flat will have all those facilities available in an ordinary house such as a complete kitchen, fully operational bathrooms, and bedrooms along with appropriate living areas. The most recently introduced amenity in a granny flat is the granny pod. This facilitates the ability to use intricate technology to monitor the occupants of the granny flats from distant locations. This is an especially attractive option for people who are housing older family members in need of occasional supervision.

In conclusion, a granny flat is an additional space built into the property plan of a family home that can be used by the owners of the home in whichever way convenient to them.
