Rishra is a city in the Hooghly district of Kolkata, West Bengal. Managed by the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority, the city’s PIN code is 712248. The locality is known for a number of reasons, from its rich historical past to its close proximity to the Hooghly River. It has emerged as a major industrial hub that significantly contributes to Kolkata’s economic growth.

The town’s name has remarkably interesting origins. In detailed historical accounts, the town has been recorded as a home to hermitages of local saints, or Rishis. Hence, the name, Rishra. The locality and its neighbourhoods boast several architectural remnants of our colonial past, ranging from the Portuguese to the British to the French. It is said that Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose took refuge in Rishra during his Great Escape.

The historically rich locality of Rishra today continues to grow at an unbound pace with several industries and factories coming up by the day. The town enjoys close proximity to the capital city of ‘Kolkata’. Places to Visit in Rishra, Kolkata

Rishra’s neighbourhood is filled with monumental contributions of the colonial era. Several British, Portuguese and French buildings are popular tourist destinations around this locality. Let us explore these and some other famous getaway destinations in and around West Bengal’s Rishra city.

Bandel Church

Bandel Church, established by the Portuguese in the 16th century, is one of the oldest churches in West Bengal. Built along the banks of the Hooghly River, the church is dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary. Its ageing walls, unique colours and architectural design speak volumes of Bengal’s history. About 40 minutes away from Rishra, the church attracts history enthusiasts and spiritual seekers alike.

Chandannagar

Take a look at Bengal through a French lens by visiting Chandannagar, a former French colony. The mix of Bengali and French culture astounds, fascinates and intrigues, all at once. An easy half-hour drive from Rishra will open up the fragments of the colonial age right in front of you in this town. From its buildings and churches to its roads and pavements, everything will remind you of a different era. Chandannagar Museum and Chandannagar Strand are some of the town’s popular attractions.

Hangseshwari Temple

In the quaint town of Bansberia lies the famous Hangseshwari Temple.  The 13 minarets of the temple stand as a testament to the vast range of Bengal’s architectural prowess. These thirteen spires, based on the tantric principles of architecture, represent different parts of the human body. Dedicated to Goddess Hangseshwari, it’s not just a spiritual retreat but also an art and architectural marvel, attracting tourists and devotees alike.

Tarakeshwar Temple

A renowned pilgrimage site, the Tarakeshwar Temple, is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple witnesses a huge influx of devotees, especially during the ‘Shravana’ months. Although a little distant from Rishra, visiting this temple makes for an unforgettable spiritual experience with your friends and family. The intricate carvings and designs are a fine example of the Bengal school of architecture. Each year, special festivals like the Tarakeswar Fair are organised to revel and rejoice in the abode of Lord Shiva.

Serampore Rajabari

The dilapidated remnants of the Serampore Rajabari Palace carry Bengal’s royal heritage in them. The Rajabari was the residence of the royal family of Serampore. With the decline of the royal family’s influence and the takeover by the British, the palace, like many royal estates, saw a change in its fortunes. A mix of Indian and European style architecture, the palace today stands as an attractive tourist spot showcasing rich historical, cultural and architectural depth.

Locality Comparison

The major difference between Rishra and its neighbouring localities is the area’s prospering industrial growth. While neighbouring localities like Konnagar and Seerampore are seamlessly connected to Rishra, economic activity is considerably higher in this locality. Other than this aspect, Rishra shares a lot in common with its neighbours. For instance, Seerampore and Konnagar are as culturally and historically rich as Rishra. All these localities are steeped in colonial architecture, located near the Hooghly River and enjoy sound connectivity.

Concluding Remarks

Rishra is an attractive locality, offering a mix of residential and commercial opportunities. The city’s semi-urban ways of life offer numerous advantages to its residents. With its strategic location, modern amenities and closely located tourist attractions, Rishra offers a complete and holistic package.
